Oil and gas demand in India ranks fifth in the world, and is a USD 110billion industry. An estimated 75% of the petroleum oil requirements of India are met by imports. To tackle this, large-scale oil and gas exploration and drilling is being undertaken.

The New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP), helped kick off a major exploration program in India has a record number of international bidders vying for projects. With NELP VIII, the overall number of blocks brought under exploration exceeded 200. The auction which ended on 12 th October 2009, the biggest ever on India’s offshore E&P, attracted over US$ 10 billion in investment commitments and increased India’s acreage under license fourfold.
